KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Ground was broken on Monday for a new building on the site where two Kansas City firefighters died in the line of duty.
FOX 4 reports that a memorial marks the place where firefighters John Mesh and Larry Leggio died in October of 2015. The two were killed in an exterior wall collapse after they helped rescue two people.

The owner of a nail salon in the building, Thu Hong Nguyen, intentionally set the fire. She is serving a 74-year sentence for arson and second degree murder.
The community dedicated a memorial to Mesh and Leggio at the site, and this new project will enhance this memorial. Two trees in honor of each firefighter, and a bench, are planned to be added.
