PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — The Philadelphia Fire Department celebrates good news this week as the city reopens closed fire companies and makes plans to hire 100 firefighters.

WPVI reports that four engine companies closed during the recession in 2009 are being brought back thanks to a FEMA grant.

The over $16 million-dollar grant from FEMA will allow the city to hire more firefighters and restore engines in the Frankford, Roxborough, Old City, and South Philadelphia neighborhoods.

Deputy Commissioner Craig Murphy told WPVI that the department also had three ladder companies closed and he say that the department plans to reopen those companies as well.
