A U.S. Air Force veteran is thanking firefighters for saving his American flag and his Air Force banner while battling the Hatcher Mountain fires.
Herman Duran lost his dream home in the Shagbark Community but said he’s inspired by the fire crews who saved his flag from the fire.
Duran lives in Florida and lost vacation home in Tennessee, but says he will rebuild.
Northview Fire Department Battalion Chief Heidi Satterfield told WATE she was moved by instinct to save the flags. “I saw this beautiful American flag flying in the wind just as freely as it flies normally in the wind and I stopped in my tracks. I could not leave that house without taking it down.”
