Firefighter Killed, Others Injured in Explosion in Germany

LIENEN, Germany — One firefighter is dead, and four others injured after a gas explosion in Lienen, according to Bild.

Officials say that residents smelled gas and alerted the emergency services. During an investigation of the leak an explosion occurred trapping two firefighters underneath debris.

Firefighters worked under the threat of additional collapse to reach and rescue the two trapped firefighters.

One firefighter, 19, was killed in the explosion.

The other trapped firefighter was seriously injured and taken to a hospital.

The German Fire Brigades Association said in a statement, “”Our thoughts are with the comrades and families. We hope for a full recovery of the injured.”

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
