Fire at AZ Lithium-Ion Battery Storage Site Now in Fifth Day, Evacuations Ordered

Chandler (AZ) firefighters have been working a fire at a lithium-ion battery storage site since Monday.

The department responded the building that serves as a battery storage center when smoke was detected at a door to the facility.

The fire has been burning in the building since then, as firefighters have kept a fire suppression system flowing water on the fire and vented the building to control the burning.

Thursday, area businesses and residents were asked to evacuate while the fire department increased ventilation in the building and sent a robot into the building to take air samples from the interior. They expected to send robots back into the building Friday.

A fire at a similar plant nearby several years ago where firefighters were injured helped Chandler determine the proper attack for this fire.
