Each of the five boroughs of New York City–Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island–has one heavy rescue assigned to it and is staffed by an officer and five firefighters. These new rescues will replace the five existing Ferrara units purchased in 2010.
Because of FDNY’s high call volume of more than 550,000 annual calls, the fleet’s heavy rescue units are replaced every seven years. The rescue companies carry a wide variety of specialized tools and equipment and have the training to handle incidents that may be outside the capabilities of a normal engine or ladder company.
The new rigs will feature:
- Ferrara’s Ultraâ„¢ custom two-door cab/chassis and walk-in rescue bodies, both manufactured of 12-gauge 3CR12 stainless steel
- Exterior compartment storage of 492 cubic feet and interior compartment storage of 202 cubic feet, with custom shelving, trays, and storage modules to maximize space and for ease of access to equipment
- Five-year bumper-to-bumper and 10- year structural warranty
As with the previous units, these new units will be built to FDNY’s specifications using components, engineering, and production methods to ensure the trucks endure the rigorous duty cycle of the FDNY.
