The focus is on fire suppression and advanced life safety systems and building controls from the perspective of first responders integrating these systems in their response and planning activities. Attendees will become familiar with overviews of various types of water-based and nonwater-based fire suppression systems, control functions, detection methods, and notification methods. The information provided prepares responders to interface with today’s advanced buildings and facilities. The objective is to provide responders with knowledge and experience to facilitate their interacting with building fire and life safety systems.
The presentation will be conducted using a variety of explanatory and demonstrative tools. Attendees will initially observe a lecture, aided by the use of power point illustrations of examples of the various types of systems. The intent of this portion is to expose attendees to the types of detection, notification, control, and suppression systems which may be installed in various facilities. They will be given a brief overview of the system types, intended functions, how they operate, and how they can aid in an emergency response. During this presentation experts with experience on each type of systems will relate to their fire service experience to connect with audience members on the types of systems. After this brief lecture, we will conduct demonstrations of some of the types of systems with hands on valves, systems, and accessories brought with us. Demonstrations will be conducted in smaller break out groups allowing attendees the opportunity to interact with each type of system.
Upon completion of this seminar, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the common types of fire protection and control systems installed in facilities and their functions.
- Describe ways of using systems to obtain information and aid in suppression activities.
- Identify the various types of systems installed in facilities in their jurisdiction.
- Create a response plan for a facility that integrates building functions to collect information and control the spread of fire and products of combustion.
