DURHAM, North Carolina — 19 years after being decommissioned the Durham Fire Department places Rescue 1 back in service.

Rescue 1 will respond citywide and the department’s heavy rescue and special hazards company.

Officials tell WNCN that the company will be staffed with personnel who specialize in vehicle extrications, fire response, building collapse, water rescue, confined space rescue, and high-angle rescue.

Assistant Chief of Operations Andy Sannipoli said the decision to reorganize the company came after an increase of calls as the population grows.

The fire department hired 15 new firefighters to staff the company, working five on each shift.
