Danville’s mayor wants to reduce the number of firefighters on each shift from 12 to 11 to reduce the city’s overtime costs.
The department is currently down nine firefighters, resulting in overtime costs of $60,000 per month.
The mayor argues that Danville’s staffing level is higher than similar-size communities. The firefighter’s union says, however, that’s because of the larger buildings in Danville.
The union has proposed moving two probationary firefighters onto shift rotation while they finish training to ease the shortage.
