Aug. 15—CROWN POINT — Regular training paid off this week when Crown Point firefighters rescued a city employee, who had fallen into a lift station and was trapped.

Crown Point Fire Rescue reported it was called out shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday to East 129th Avenue and Mississippi Parkway for a report of a person trapped in a confine space.

Responders said they learned the city employee fell into a lift station and was trapped at the bottom. The department’s rescue team retrieved the employee by 11:14 a.m.

“The employee was airlifted by Loyola LifeStar with serious injuries to the University of Chicago Hyde Park in stable condition,” firefighters said.

“We train every day to keep our community safe, and our Technical Rescue Team holds training monthly for situations just like this,” Crown Point Fire Chief Mark Baumgardner Jr. said.

“The City workforce is like family, so when it’s one of our own, it’s more personal,” he said. “We’re keeping this employee and their family in our thoughts.”

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has reportedly been notified of the incident.

The Crown Point Police Department also responded to the scene.
