Charlotte (MI) Volunteer Fire Department Quits to Protest City Treatment

All 23 volunteer firefighters with the Charlotte Fire Department resigned at Monday night’s City Council meeting.

The firefighters said the decision comes as the culmination of a long period of frustration with the city’s oversight of the department, that included second-guessing some department procedures.

The firefighters said councilors had made inflammatory comments about the volunteer force, discredited the department’s work, and pushed out the newly-appointed fire chief.

The city still has the full-time arm of the department and will rely on neighboring departments for coverage.
