Cause of Death: Chicago (IL) Firefighter Died of Smoke Inhalation

A Chicago firefighter killed on Tuesday at a house fire died from inhaling smoke and soot, leading to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Firefighter Jermaine Pelt, 49, died battling a fire in the 12000 block of South Wallace Street. He was on a hoseline fighting the fire inside one of the houses on fire when all crews were ordered out.

Crews had to pull Pelt from the building after finding him collapsed inside. He was not trapped in the fire building, but the exact nature of why he was unable to escape remains under investigation.

The medical examiner announced that the immediate cause of death was carbon monoxide toxicity, however.
