The Cary Fire Department will retrofit its fire engines with lithium-ion batteries to provide power without needing the motor running.
Assistant Chief David Ranes told CBS 17 the fire engines use about a gallon and a half to two and a half gallons per hour when idling, and much of that time all that’s needed is power for the lights.
The $394,000 project should pay for itself in five to seven years in reduced fuel consumption and maintenance costs. In addition, the project will reduce truck emissions.
