Manhattan Beach chief relieved of duties

MANHATTAN BEACH, California — CBS Los Angeles reported that Manhattan Beach City Manager Bruce Moe has relieved Fire Chief Daryn Drum of his duties based on recent comments regarding violence.
In a statement from the city, Chief Drum sued the analogy of ‘not taking our foot off their throat, a number of times when referring to an external vendor during a meeting of public safety officials.
During a podcast about police interactions and civil unrest Chief Drum said, “You’re one good shooting away from civil unrest,” when asked about how the fire department prepares for protests and civil unrest.
“If you comply, there’s no violence. If you respond with violence, the officer has no choice.” Chief Drum continued.
City Manager Moe told CBS Los Angeles “We need thoughtful leaders offering voices that are open and inclusive.”
Moe added, “Chief Drum’s recent comments do not reflect our core values as a City, and an immediate change of Fire Department leadership is in the community’s best interests.”
Police Chief Derrick Abell will service as the acting fire chief in addition to his current duties.
CBS Los Angeles said Chief Drum could not be reached for comment.
