ELK GROVE, California — The Cosumnes Fire Department’s newest firefighters in 2020 will be the first to graduate having used virtual reality training combined with the live fire experience.

Technology specialist Kirk McKenzie told KCRA that the fire department is one of only two in the U.S. using this technology.

The recent addition of virtual reality goggles will allow cadets to experience the dangers without being in harm’s way.

The goggles give the wearer a 360-degree view of a room where a fire begins and develops into the flashover phase.

Battalion Chief Rick Clarke told KCRA that this early exposure at a safe distance will help the cadets learn how to approach a fire.
