A commercial structure fire broke out Monday night in southwest Birmingham, officials said.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel responded to Center Street North and St. Charles Avenue Southwest on a commercial structure fire around 6:03 p.m., said Lt. Catina M. Williams.

It was not immediately clear what structure was on fire, but the blaze sent plumes of thick gray smoke into the air that was visible for miles.

Williams said the structure had been burned on two other ocassions.

Firefighters got the blaze under control within an hour, she said.
