Belleville (MO) Firefighters Rescue Toddler Hiding in House Fire that Killed Woman

A woman died and firefighters had to rescue a boy from a fire that destroyed a home in downtown Belleville Tuesday.

Kirsten Tompkins, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire in the 600 block of Rodenmeyer Street.

Flames were visible when firefighters arrived at the house around 6 a.m. Two people who had escaped from the building informed them that two people remained inside.

The boy was found hiding in a front bedroom and was unharmed. Tompkins was already dead when firefighters found her in a bedroom at the rear of the house.
