Asheville, NC Fire Department Adds Fourth Firefighter to Ladder Companies

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) – May was a historic time for Asheville Fire Department. For the first time ever, ladder trucks will have a larger four-man crew.

Last year, Asheville Fire Department got $800,000 from the federal government and another $500,000 from the city to put four firefighters on ladder trucks; instead of three.

“2010, NIST, National Institute for Standards and Technology, did a landmark study, where they were able to also determine that four firefighter companies were not only more effective, but much more safe for firefighters than three firefighter companies,” Asheville Fire Department Chief Scott Burnette said.
