Wichita (KS) Firefighters Battle Overnight Recycling Plant Fire

A Wichita recycling plant caught fire Sunday and burned through the night.

The fire was reported just before 7 p.m. at Evergreen Recycling in the 300 block of W 53rd St N. Sedgwick County Fire District 1 responded first and called for assistance from Wichita Fire Department

Crews deployed ladder trucks and used aerial streams to knock down the flames. But even with thousands of gallons per minute applied to the fire, it remained difficult to extinguish.

The fire was deep in a wood pile and heat from the fire dissipated some of the water before it would reach the flames, some 20-30 feet into the fire, leading to a night-long effort to extinguish the fire

No reports of injuries have come from the fire.
