West Islip Fire Captain John Bradley suffered a traumatic brain injury when he fell at a fire in May of 2018. Two years later, while in a rehab facility for treatment of the injury, Bradley caught COVID-19 and died.
Insurers are refusing to pay a line of duty death benefit, saying Bradley’s death was the result of COVID-19, not the brain injury, News 12 reports.
Two insurance companies, Arch Insurance and McNeil and Co., have said the death of the 31-year veteran did not qualify as a line of duty death.
Bradley’s family is hoping the company will change its opinion and pay the $150,000 to his widow, since John would not have been in rehab where he caught the virus if not for the line of duty brain injury.
“When you signed your name on the dotted line and took the oath saying would protect the community and you’ll stand up for the Constitution, for this to happen? It’s wrong,” John’s son Christopher told News 12.
