Two Firefighters Injured Battling Fire at Multi-Family Home in New London (CT)

Justin Muszynski – Hartford Courant

Two firefighters were injured battling a two-alarm fire at a multi-family home in New London early Monday.

The fire broke out shortly before 4 a.m. at a house on Eastern Avenue, according to the New London Fire Department.

The first crews on scene entered the home and began battling the blaze. Five people who were inside when the fire started were able to make it out safely, fire officials said.

Firefighters were called out of the residence early on into the call after a floor collapsed on the first floor in a stairway in the rear of the residence, according to fire officials. They then moved to a defensive attack from outside of the home.

At one point, crews cut holes in the roof of the home to vent it, fire officials said.

Crews were able to knock down the fire before going back into the home for overhaul, according to fire officials. Firefighters received mutual aid from a number of area fire departments.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and were taken to an area hospital, fire officials said. No other injuries were reported.

The fire left the home uninhabitable, displacing five people.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
