Salt Lake (UT) Fire Department Deploys Social Workers as First Responders

The Salt Lake Fire Department is launching a program to have licensed clinical social workers respond alongside firefighters to calls involving people in mental health crisis.

The Community Health Access Team (CHAT) program rolls out with social workers on duty at firehouses Monday through Friday.

Calls such as someone who is suicidal or a substance abuser seeking treatment will now be answered by the social workers with broader access to treatment options than the emergency room.
