Equine rescue training in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, California – San Diego firefighters underwent 24 hours of classroom and hands-on training provided by the Riverside Fire Department on equine rescue lifting. Depending upon the circumstances, these rescues can be performed by using rope systems or one of our helicopters. San Diego Fire Rescue Air Operations crews were involved in an exercise using a mannequin horse which weighs 800 lbs. Firefighters were also taught the psychology of horses and safe conduct in their presence. No live animals were used in this training exercise.
