NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – The New Haven Independent has reported the names of the fallen and injured New Haven firefighters from this morning’s house fire.

Firefighter Ricardo Torres was on the second floor when he transmitted a mayday message.

A second mayday was transmitted by Lieutenant Samod Rankins.

Firefighters located and removed both Torres and Rankins from the building. The Independent reported that both had run out of air and were unconscious.

Firefighter Torres was a member of the most recent class of firefighters. He was declared dead at the hospital.

Torres was married with a three-year-old child and a second child expected.

Lieutenant Rankins was transported to Bridgeport Hospital and is reported to be in a medically induced coma.

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – WTNH is reporting that a New Haven firefighter has died and at least three other firefighters were injured while fighting a house fire in the 100 block of Valley Street at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

News 8 was told the fire started at a two-and-a-half-story home at 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning. New Haven Fire Chief John Alston, Jr. said that firefighters saw heavy fire when they were arrived and were told of multiple occupants trapped.

WFSB reports that firefighters had rescued a woman inside the home shortly after arriving on the scene.

At some point after the rescue a mayday was transmitted and two firefighters were removed from the structure. “One firefighter reported being lost and disorientated,” Fire Chief Alston told WFSB. “We activated our search and rescue team to find them. Turned out, it was two of them.”

Two firefighters were pulled from the building. Officials said a total of four firefighters were injured. One has died from injuries sustained.

Of the injured firefighters, one is reported to be in critical condition.
