Large Shipyard Fire in Mystic (CT) Damages Warehouse, Office Building

A large shipyard fire in the Mystic section of Groton on Monday night led to a warehouse and office building sustaining major damage.

The fire was reported at 11:32 p.m. when someone called 911 and said a detached warehouse building at the Mystic Shipyard on Essex Street was ablaze, according to the Town of Groton Police Department.

Police and members of the Mystic Fire Department responded and found that the roof of the building was engulfed in flames. Crews established a safety perimeter around the building while firefighters began efforts to put it out.

The large response also included members of the Old Mystic, Submarine Base, Poquonnock Bridge, Ledyard, Noank, City of Groton, North Stonington and Quiambaug Fire Departments, according to police. A canteen truck from the Providence, Rhode Island Fire Department as well as medics from the Lawrence + Memorial, Groton and Mystic River ambulance services also responded.

No injuries were reported.

Police said the detached warehouse and office building sustained major structural and smoke damage and were found to be uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
