Dog alerts neighbors to the burning home

SANDWICH — Jean Gilrein was suddenly awakened by Murphy the Aussiedoodle barking incessantly. She went to investigate and with the help of Murphy’s barking she eventually noticed the neighbor’s house catching fire. She then immediately called 911.

At about 2:30​ a.m., multiple crews responded to 14 Bourne Ave for what turned into a three alarm structure fire. Firefighters were still on scene battling the blaze at the time of this report (about 5:30​ a.m.).

It’s unknown is the residence was occupied at the time of the fire.

The state fire marshal was asked to respond to the scene.

Firefighters are expected to be on scene for the remainder of the overnight.
