A man has died after a shooting Wednesday morning at a Midtown apartment building in Kansas City, after firefighters heard gunfire while on a medical call there.

Firefighters declared a crew emergency and requested police to respond after hearing shots being fired outside or in the lobby of the building at 400 East Armour Blvd. in the Hyde Park area, said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.

The crew also asked that additional crews and resources be sent to the scene. Hopkins said the initial fire crew then treated and took one person to the hospital with critical injuries.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital, said Major Leslie Foreman with the Kansas City Police Department’s Central Patrol Division.

Firefighters were not in danger at the time of the shooting, Hopkins said. The additional fire crews handled the original medical call.

Witnesses pointed out a possible “person of interest,” and officers took the person into custody, Foreman said.

“It appears at least initially there was some type of a confrontation between the victim and suspect,” Foreman said. “We don’t know if they knew each other or anything like that, but fortunately, we had citizens who are willing to help us officers . . . .We’re always thankful for all the help.”

The killing is Kansas City’s 93rd homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. By this time in 2023, which was Kansas City’s deadliest year, there were 123 killings. Last year, the city ended the year with a total of 185 homicides.

Anyone with information about the killings is asked to call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS (8744). Information submitted anonymously to the hotline can earn a reward of up to $25,000. Witnesses can also contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043.
