Fire Departments from Five Counties Respond to Girard (OH) Scrapyard Fire

Firefighters from five counties battled a stubborn fire at the Metalico Youngstown, Inc. scrapyard in Girard on Saturday.

The fire broke out at around 3 p.m. on Furnace Lane in Girard and the towering smoke plumes could be seen for miles around.

Limited water at the site meant tankers from surrounding counties were called out to keep shuttling water to the fire. More than 1 million gallons of water were dumped on the fire.

No injuries were reported in the fire, though one firefighter had to visit the hospital after suffering a medical incident.

Responding fire departments included Middlefield, Kinsman Township, Austintown, Orwell, Hiram, Parkman, Newbury, Montville, Southington and Munson.
