Mar. 11—COLUMBIA — Two people were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out at their house early Tuesday, the town’s fire chief said.
The fire in the 100 block of West Street on the western edge of town was reported shortly before 3:15 a.m., Chief Scott Haddad said. Firefighters were able to get it under control within about a half-hour, he said.
The residents, who were taken to the hospital to be evaluated, won’t be able to return to the home for a while, Haddad said.
“The house does not appear to be livable at this time,” he said.
About 40 firefighters and emergency medical technicians were at the scene, Haddad said. The Columbia Volunteer Fire Department had help from crews from Andover, Hebron, UConn and Willimantic as well as from a Windham Hospital paramedic, he said.
The Columbia fire marshal is investigating the cause.
