Engine 53 arrived on scene by themselves for several minutes before additional units were able to arrive and were able to protect them home as the fire reached the foundation before progress was stopped. They also prevented the fire from reaching a propane tank prior to Engine 59, Engine 59 and CALFIRE arriving on scene.
According to Fire Marshal Steve Aubert, the cause of the fire is undetermined, but appears something was discarded on the side of the road. In total, the vegetation fire destroyed 2 barns, 2 out buildings, and 1 cargo van trailer. Aubert reminded the public to take preventative measures around their home with exterior hazard abatement with the warm weather causing vegetation dying out. He also stated that the deadline for abatement requirements is approaching. Firefighters were on scene for 3-hours 24-minutes.
The California Highway Patrol and Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office provided traffic control. Note: ECCFPD is a 3-station District in Contra Costa County, CA covering 250-square miles which includes: Cities of Brentwood & Oakley, Town of Discovery Bay, along with communities of Bethel Island, Knightsen, Byron and Morgan Territory.
