ALEXANDRIA, Virginia – Using data from past and current operations the Alexandria Fire Department has announced that it will begin an organizational restructuring starting June 12 that will help the department respond better to emergencies.

ALXNOW reports that the plan includes the formation of battalion management teams consisting of a battalion chief and EMS captain or fire captain on duty for all three shifts for the east and west ends of the city.

The restructuring will improve daily operations by using the experience of more tenured staff to improve station management, get ahead of personnel and facility issues, and offer professional development opportunities for new frontline supervisors.

“Over the past year, our team has reviewed various data including response times, call volume, response coverage and staffing to help us make a data-driven decision that will benefit our workforce and the community,” Alexandria Fire Chief Corey Smedley said in a video about the reorganization.

Additional changes include:

Moving the Technical Rescue Team from Station 204 to Station 209 at Potomac Yard

Moving the Inland Water Rescue resources to Station 209 for more efficient response to possible flooding in the area

Moving the Hazardous Materials Team to Station 210 for more efficient response to the industrial park, the Norfolk Southern Ethanol Transloading Facility and access to Interstate 495

Moving the Marine Operations Team will to Station 204 in Old Town North

Adding a ladder truck at Station 203 in the city’s North Ridge neighborhood
