Virginia County Department Names New Deputy Chief

Christopher Travis Griffith has been promoted to deputy chief of the Roanoke County Fire & Rescue department.

Griffith’s promotion comes three months after Stephen Simon was promoted from deputy chief to chief of the department.

Griffith began his service with the county in 2002 as a firefighter and EMT. He was promoted to fire lieutenant in 2005, to fire captain in 2008 and then battalion chief in 2012. He served as an operations battalion chief for three years before becoming the battalion chief over the training division in July, when he was responsible for overseeing the training program for 160 career personnel and nearly 200 volunteers.

Griffith holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Virginia. He is also a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program.

“Travis possesses the great leadership qualities needed to help this department move forward,” Chief Stephen Simon said in a statement. “I feel fortunate to be able to promote a deputy chief from within the department.”
