USFA: North Carolina On-Duty Death

While on duty, contracted COVID-19 at the fire station

The U.S. Fire Administration has announced the official on-duty death of Division Chief Mark Covil, 51, of Pender (NC) EMS and Fire on August 30, 2021.

While on duty, Division Chief Mark Covil contracted COVID-19 at the fire station. He passed away on Monday, Aug. 30, 2021 from the virus.

To date, 81 firefighter fatalities have been reported to USFA in 2021. Year-to-date and annual USFA firefighter fatality reports are posted online at https://www.usfa.fema.gov/data/statistics/ff_fatality_reports.html

Fatality status is provisional and may change as USFA contacts State Fire Marshals to verify fatality incident information.
