Becoming a certified indicent safety officer is an important step in any company officer’s development; that’s why FireRescue magazine is pleased to support the Safety Officer of the Year award, presented by the Fire Department Safety Officer Association and the IAFC’s Safety, Health and Survival Section. In this brief interview, Tim Sendelbach talks with the 2011 award winner, Dave Zinther, training and safety officer for the Westmont (Ill.) Fire Department, as well as two FDSOA leaders, Mike Petroff, chairman of the board, and Bob Finley, training and certification coordinator. Finley and Petroff share some of the history of the FDSOA and the safety officer certification, and Zinther shares his personal experience in training more than 1,100 officers to be safety officers.
