ANDERSON, SC — A driver has been charged in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a volunteer firefighter on Sunday night in Anderson.
FOX Carolina reports that Sandy Springs Fire Department firefighter Kenneth Stanton, 52, was assisting at the scene of a crash on Highway 76 and Sandy Springs Road when he was struck by a passing vehicle. Stanton suffered head trauma and other injuries. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol arrested 64-year old Charles Pickens and charged him with felony driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
Pickens reportedly went around emergency apparatus on the scene and struck Stanton and continued driving. Authorities tracked Pickens down at his home. He is currently being held in the Anderson County Detention Center.
