The fire that started north of Mandan on Monday afternoon is “pretty well taken care of,” said Mandan Rural Fire Chief Lynn Gustin, adding the snow should help put out remaining flareups.
In total, the fire burned at most 100 acres, Gustin said, and no structures were damaged. The cost of putting out the fire was in the $10,000 to $15,000 dollar range, he said, accounting for the fuel, foam, equipment wear and volunteer stipends.
The North Dakota Forest Service put out hot spots on Wednesday afternoon, by cutting down hazardous trees and spraying water on big logs that were still burning, Cody Mattson, Morton County emergency manager said.
Mattson said he expects the snow to “dampen the fuel around the area and prevent any fires from spreading.”
