Shelby, Iowa Firefighter Killed While Directing Traffic at Accident Scene

SHELBY, Iowa (AP) – A Shelby firefighter has been killed while directing traffic around an accident scene on Interstate 80 in western Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol identified the victim as 41-year-old Michael Collins, of Minden.

The patrol says Collins was struck by a car around 6:50 p.m. Sunday at the scene of the earlier crash on Interstate 80 just east of the Shelby exit in Pottawattamie County.

The patrol says Collins was hit by a car driven by 43-year old David Lee Thies, of Ames.

The accident is being investigated.
