Second Chances for Sex Offenders as Firefighters Scrutinized in Pennsylvania

NORTHERN CAMBRIA (WJAC TV) – Controversy recently came to Spartansburg, Pennsylvania, when the community discovered their newly re-elected fire chief was a convicted sex offender listed in the Megan’s Law registry.

The chief resigned amid public outcry, raising important questions in the process.

What laws does Pennsylvania have regarding who is — and who is not — permitted to volunteer as a first responder?

6 News investigated the laws and looked into the same issues in the area locally.

“I can’t imagine, if we as a company, didn’t give him the second chance,” said Chief Paul Demi of the Spangler Fire Company.
