San Diego Family Escapes Burning Home

June 11, 2013 — Residents of a home in Kearny Mesa, a suburb of San Diego, were alerted to a nearby fire as they began smelling smoke, but as the ceiling began to fall in, they realized how close the flames really were and evacuated, carrying a number of personal possessions with them to the safety of the street.

With the flames racing along the attic of the home, San Diego Fire-Rescue units began to arrive on scene.  First-in was Engine 36, followed by Engine 28, Truck 28. Engine 27 and Engine 5, Medic 39, Battalion 2 and Battalion 3. Fire crews got a handle on the flames quickly, minimizing damage to the structure.

According to SDF-RD Battalion Chief Rick Ballard, the fire displaced four people, who were assisted by the Red Cross in finding other lodging.   Total damage was estimated at $150,000, with cause ruled as accidental.
