TRENTON, NJ (MyFoxPhilly.com) – Robbers in Trenton, N.J. have looted a firehouse while its crew was out fighting fires.
In fact, the fire house on Calhoun Street and Fairway Drive in Trenton has been hit three times.
The men and women of the fire department put their lives on the line every time they go out on a fire call, and they say the last thing they need to worry about is being ripped off.
It’s almost an unspeakable crime: robbing firefighters of their personal belongings while they’re out protecting the public on fire calls and away from their stations.
Firefighters are incensed over three break-ins and other recent incidents directed at Trenton’s bravest.
On Monday, while Engine 1 was away from the fire station on Calhoun Street, someone broke in through a bathroom window, ransacked the firefighters lockers and stole several items.
Residents are fired up too. Ann Bonner lives on Kirkbride Street where someone threw a chunk of concrete like this at firefighters when they responded to a call here.
“That’s bad I don’t go for it,” she said.
On Genesee Street, where four firefighters where hurt fighting a fire, some crook tried to steal a chainsaw off the back of a fire truck while firefighters were dousing the flames
He dropped the saw and got away.
Firefighters think the break-ins and thefts could be related to the recent layoffs of over 100 police officers.
Now signs outside the fire station say there are surveillance cameras on site, but Fox 29 has been told there is no surveillance video from the break in.
Trenton police continue to investigate, and new security measures are being put in place to make the firehouse safer.
