Preplanning Helps at Buffalo Vacant Building Fire

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – It was an hours-long battle for Buffalo’s bravest overnight. Flames erupted just before 12:30 a.m. and crews remained on the scene until around 5 a.m.

The vacant structure on Genesee and Doat Streets is a very large building, but one that firefighters already had done their homework on. Fire crews were able to get to the scene very quickly and went right into defensive efforts.

The building was pre planned by firefighters. Right away they knew the potentially dangerous conditions of the structural integrity of the building and went about fighting the fire accordingly. Not long after, a large section of the former manufacturing building came down, but no one was hurt.

Buffalo Fire Department Division Chief John Mogavro said, “We had marked this building previously, it has entered into our dispatch as a vacant, dangerous building as we’ve done with multiple buildings throughout the city. The companies were very familiar with this one, it’s a large structure and we try and target these ones where it’s a hazard not only to the firefighters but the community as well.”

Firefighters have contained the building, but are monitoring it, making sure it doesn’t start up again. The division chief says the fire is suspicious in nature, since there were no active electrical or gas lines into the building.
