Norwich Firefighter Killed, Sons Injured, in Crash

NORWICH, Conn. (AP) – A Norwich firefighter has died in a four-car crash and another man was seriously injured.

State Police say 33-year-old Lt. Benjamin Demond was traveling south on I-395 in Montville with his two sons Friday night when his car was hit by another car, sending him head-on into another vehicle.

Police say Willis Goodale of Groton was charged with driving under the influence and is being held on $1 million bond. It was not known Sunday if he is represented by a lawyer.

Police say the 50-year-old Goodale tried to use an emergency vehicle turnaround when his vehicle hit Demond’s car.

Demond, trying to avoid Goodale, hit another vehicle, injuring the driver. Another driver also was involved but police say he was not injured.

The two sons remained hospitalized Saturday night.
