Nine Dogs Killed in Ohio House Fire

Columbus, Ohio–Nine dogs were killed yesterday afternoon when fire swept through an East Side house where dogs were boarded and bred.

When Columbus firefighters arrived at 3730 Roswell Dr. shortly after 3 p.m., they found smoke and fire pouring out of the kitchen in the back of the house.

A woman at the house told firefighters that she turned on the stove and it sparked, said Battalion Chief Michael Fowler, spokesman for the Columbus Fire Division. The woman wasn’t injured.

After the fire was extinguished, two Doberman pinschers and seven schnauzers were found dead in the house. All were owned by the people who live there, Fowler said.

A female Doberman and four puppies were rescued.

The house has a sign for Love’s K-9 Oasis, advertising that it boards and grooms dogs and sells puppies. The house is owned by Michael W. Loving, according to county auditor’s records.

Investigators will determine the exact cause of the fire, but it’s thought to be accidental, Fowler said. Damage was estimated at $50,000.

The owners couldn’t be reached for comment.
