Nine Departments Respond to Maine Processing Facility Fire

TRENTON, Maine – The state fire marshal was on the scene Sunday investigating a fire that destroyed a future mussel-processing facility in Trenton Saturday night.

The origin of the fire was not known Sunday afternoon, but it is not considered suspicious, according to Trenton Fire Chief Steve Corson.

A neighbor of the facility reported the fire in the commercial building at 804 Bar Harbor Road around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Corson did not have the name of the building’s owners, but said it was under construction and about 80 to 85 percent complete.

Nine departments responded to the call and Corson said when firefighters arrived, the fire was confined primarily to the structure’s interior.

“It was difficult to get access to the fire [because] there were not a lot of windows,” he said. “It was heavily involved inside and stayed inside for awhile before it finally came out of the backside of the building.”

Crews brought in water by tanker trucks from the Trenton Fire Station and from a water source on Route 3 about a mile from the fire. They remained on the scene for about 14 hours, Corson said.

There were no injuries and Corson said nearby structures and homes were not threatened by the blaze.

Corson said the structure, which was a total loss, was insured and it is his understanding the owners would rebuild.

The Trenton Fire Department received mutual aid from the Ellsworth, Lamoine, Hancock, Mt. Desert, Surry, Sullivan and Sorrento fire departments.
