Mother & 6 Kids Narrowly Escape California Apartment Fire

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.– Firefighters say a woman and her six children narrowly escaped flames in a bedroom of their San Luis Obispo apartment.

The family was sleeping when a candle started the blaze in the second-floor apartment just after 1 a.m. Thursday.

Battalion Chief Jeff Gater says in a news release that police officers arrived just ahead of firefighters and confirmed the family managed to get out as flames spread in a bedroom.

A female occupant was examined for smoke inhalation at the scene and was released.

There were no working smoke detectors inside the home.

The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes and no other apartment units were damaged.

Damage is estimated at $20,000.
