BEL AIR, Md. – A Harford County paramedic was killed after being struck by a fire department vehicle while attempting to reach a person injured in an earlier accident.
WMAR/ABC2 reports that first responders from the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched to an auto accident on Patterson Mill Road at approximately 1:50 p.m., according to a department press release.
A vehicle had slid off the roadway and into an embankment. The injured person reportedly made their way up to a nearby home to call 911. Due to reported icy conditions on the driveway to the home, a fire department utility vehicle was requested to help gain access to the patient.
The utility truck began to slide on the ice, striking the paramedic, 29-year old Eric Steciak. Steciak was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in “grave condition” according to the department statement.
Steciak began his employment with the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company in December 2011. He also served as a volunteer firefighter with the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Company in Howard County.
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the incident and has stated that weather appears to be a major factor.
