Maryland Fire Chief Arrested after Threats, Police Pursuit

CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (ABC7) – A Prince George’s County volunteer fire chief was arrested after reportedly threatening to slash his girlfriend’s tires and leading authorities on multiple chases in a fire department vehicle Tuesday, officials say.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office says their officers were called to the the 2500 block of Lisa Drive in Waldorf at around 4:50 a.m. for reported threats about the tire slashing.

Once on the scene, officers say they found Matthew Reginald Fowler, 49, of Waldorf, a Volunteer Chief of the Silver Hill Fire Department.

Authorities say Fowler was in a silver Ford F-150 with Silver Hill Fire Department logos on it. Officials say they tried to make a traffic stop but then Fowler drove off.

The sheriff’s office says their officers chased Fowler until he crossed over into Prince George’s County. They say they later got a call at around 6:11 a.m. that Fowler was back at Lisa Drive.

Fowler drove off again but authorities say they chased him down after he stopped about a mile later.

Fowler is charged with 22 traffic violations that include negligent driving and reckless driving. He was later taken to the Charles County Detention Center.

Officials say he was off-duty during the time of the incident.
