KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Kansas City’s interim fire chief will officially take the lead of the department, the city announced today.

Donna Maize will become the first woman to lead the fire department, the Kansas City Star reported.

Maize took on the interim role in September when Gary Reese stepped down.

City Manager Troy Schulte appointed Maize to the permanent position Wednesday.

Maize started with the fire department in 1992, following the footsteps of her father. She moved up to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief over the years.

Her latest assignment involved commanding the Technical Services Bureau which included apparatus, facilities, IT, logistics, and other core functions according to a department press release.

Chief Maize is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Officer Program and holds a master’s in Public Administration and a bachelor’s in Public Relations.

“Chief Maize is clearly a great leader and has proven her abilities in every job she’s had,” Schulte said. “As a second-generation KCFD firefighter, she understands the legacy and tradition, while bringing modern management skills to the department.”
