Official update from the Houston Fire Department,

HFD Captain Dwight W. Bazile, Station 46 D shift, is currently fighting for his life at Memorial Herman Hospital.

Captain Bazile and his crew responded to a report of people trapped in a house fire at England and Crosby in Southeast Houston just before 7 p.m. last night, February 19, 2015. After exiting the house fire, he collapsed and HFD medical staff immediately initiated CPR and transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he is receiving the best care possible.

Captain Bazile entered the Houston Fire Department in October of 1977 and has served most of his career from Fire Station 46 in Southeast Houston. He was promoted to Captain in 2008.

Captain Bazile is currently in extremely critical condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. We also ask that citizens of Houston continue to keep Captain Bazile and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Per family request, we are not releasing a photo at this time.

HOUSTON (Houston Chronicle) – A 37-year veteran of the Houston Fire Department is still fighting for his life after collapsing outside a fire in southeast Houston Thursday night.

Capt. Dwight Bazile, 62, led his crew of firefighters into the burning house in the 6400 block of England about 6:45 p.m. Thursday after reports that people may be inside.

Bazile was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

“It’s difficult when we know one of our brothers is fighting for his life,” HFD Capt. Ruy Lozano said at press conference Friday afternoon.

Bazile joined the Houston Fire Department in October 1977, being promoted to captain in 2008. He has served most of his career with Station 46 in southeast Houston.

“It’s like a punch in the gut when something like this happens,” said Gaylon Davenport, Bazile’s friend and president of the Houston Black Firefighters Association.

Bazile was part of a 2008 lawsuit accusing the city of discriminating against black firefighters by relying on a promotion test that was racially biased.

Lawyers for the city eventually negotiated a settlement, awarding captain’s rank and back pay to Bazile and the other firefighters.

Because of the case, the fire department introduced a new exam.
