PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — One of the lucky winners of the Honeywell, UL FDIC 2015 Scholarship was revealed today and turned out to be a Maryland firefighter honored last year for her heroic work to save a fellow firefighter involved in a crash.
Prince George’s County Firefighter/Medic Sara Shaffer was one of many first responders who were called to an accident involving a fire engine on the Capital Beltway on January 30, 2013. Firefighter/Medic Shafer was directly involved in the care of one firefighter pinned in the wreckage and suffering from massive trauma to one arm.

Maryland Firefighter/Medic Recognized for Saving Fellow Firefighter
Honeywell and the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute teamed up to offer a scholarship opportunity for 25 firefighters to attend the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) on April 20 — 25, 2015 in Indianapolis.
The scholarship prize included round-trip airfare; accommodations; passes to all classes and FDIC exhibits; a breakfast voucher; and invitation to the inauguration dinner. Winners were announced by surprise with the mailing of their scholarship kit. All entries were reviewed by a panel which included:
- Garry Briese, Executive director of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network
- Ron Siarnicki, Executive director of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation
- Stephen Kerber, Director of the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute
- Honeywell First Responder Products Leadership
